Historian Lillian Faderman states that the portrait was sourced from the Woman's Journal, a periodical published by Dr. Emily Blackwell's brother and sister-in-law between 1870-1931. However, Faderman does not cite a specific issue of the journal, and we have not been able to find the original image in digitized issues of the periodical.
