A digital scan of a page of the Michigan Daily from September 17th, 2007, featuring two halves of an article about the search for a more inclusive name for the University's Office of Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Affairs—the future Spectrum Center. There was growing support for a name that would be more inclusive for transgender and other queer students. Some decried the initiative as taking inclusiveness too far.
This article describes the state of educational segregation in Ann Arbor’s primary educational system in the 1980s. Mirroring the history of the school district from almost exactly twenty years prior, the Ann Arbor Board of Education established a Committee on Excellence to reassess how racial disparities continued to pervade the system. Of particular note are the mentions on page 1 of consistent rejections by the Board of proposed racial integration plans and on page 2 of the relationship between ongoing housing disparities and the educational system.

Lime Marmelade
4 limes
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1 3/4 oz. powder pectin
5 c. sugar
Green food coloring (optional)
Wash limes, cut in quarters lengthwise, and scrap out pulp and juice into large saucepan. Discard white membrane between sections. Simmer lime rinds with the soda and water to cover 20 minutes. Drain and cool. Scrape or cut all of the white part from rind. Cut peel lengthwise in very thin slices with sharp knife. Add peel, 3 cups water and the pectin to pulp and juice in saucepan. Over high heat, bring to hard boil, stirring occasionally. Add sugar all at once, bring to full rolling boil and boil hard, stirring, 1 minute. Remove from heat and add a little green food coloring, if desired. Let mixture set 7 minutes, skimming foam periodically. Pour into hot sterilized jars and seal. Makes 6 cups.
The Benjamin Linder Cooperative is home to 20 young people living together in a historic house in the North State Street area. Several other ICC houses are located within a 2-block radius of Linder, and the house is only a few blocks from the University of Michigan's Central Campus and the theatres, shops, and restaurants of North State Street. Linder is a popular place to live because it tends to be very clean, is located in a fairly quiet neighborhood but is still close to all of the action, and has a very high proportion of single rooms. House culture changes year to year, but you can always expect fun and imaginative house activities like a house bake-off, pranking other co-ops, and roasting s’mores over our firepit.
If youre interested in living in Linder co-op, check out more info on www.icc.coop or email their house president!
