“Governments on both sides of the Cold War divide… woke up to the seductive power of contemporary design as a political tool” The Value of Good Design‘s wall text

The Museum of Modern Art has been an influential voice in the elevation of design objects and their perceived value as evident of the combination of art and functionality that proves American exceptionalism. Through various exhibitions, including the more contemporary exhibition of The Value of Good Design in 2011, the MoMA has put on display the political nature of design and the role their institution has played in the dissemination of American propaganda to the Soviet Union. Through government sponsored exhibitions in Europe, MoMA served the Nation’s purpose in alluring European citizens to the comfort and style that the American way of living could afford. The institution became the foot soldier for the American government to implement design as a political tool.
