Materials and Consumerism
“At first glance, Modernism… appears to be associated with nonconformity" -Wilson, 2021
In the world of design, there was little agreement amongst professionals, designers, decorators and magazine editors of what “modernist” design meant and designers of this decade made their own attempts to attribute a specific style to their work. In some aspects modern design is attributed to natural materials only – such as “grained woods, nubby fabrics, stone, and ceramics,” while others leaned towards a design reminiscent of av “industrial coolness” feel and plainless that “lacks personality (Wilson, 2021, p. 11).” To compete with the design trends of the time, many furniture manufactures opted for oversimplified versions of their existing designs and branded them as “modern.” Overall, the modernistic future of this decade can be characterized by simple, geometric and biomorphic forms, lack of historical or ornate references and the incorporation of modern materials such as metals and plastics (Wilson, 2021, p. 11).
