Hello! Welcome to my archive on affirming ministries!

Content Warning: Some of the records on this site use outdated and potentially offensive language, even when attempting to be affirming or accepting. While no directly hateful language is used, please proceed with caution.

The Williams Institute states that approximately half of LGBT adults in the U.S. identify as religious ((The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, 2021). Given this, I believe it is vital to chronicle the contributions of affirming ministries and envision a future that sustains their endeavors. Since I am a student at the University of Michigan, this archive will focus on ministries in Michigan - mainly the Episcopalean Dioscese of Michigan. The churches listed in the "Past" section might seem sparse - Dignity Detroit, the Episcopalean, and Reconciliation Metropolitan Community Church were some of the only churches that actively affirmed the queer community until the early 2010s.

In the "Present" section, you will find a sampling of websites linking to different open and affirming ministires around Michigan. You will also find a link to a website in which you can search for open and affirming churches using your exact location. A lot has changed in the last 50 years and more churches than ever are becoming safe and welcoming places for the queer community.

I hope, if you are searching for a welcoming religious group, you can find one here. I also hope you are able to find some hope in the radical religious activism presented here. A theology without speaking for the disadvantaged is no real theology.
