Transgender Activism on Campus
Any transgender history cannot be discussed without the mention of trangender activism. From loud protests to quiet affairs, transgender people have been pushing for their rights at UM for decades, and it is crucial that this is recognized. While modern society is generally more open to transgender people, it has not always been this way (and still isn't for many individuals). We must acknowledge our history and thank those who have pushed for equal rights before us.
Presented here is a flyer that was handed out around the university in 1999 for an exhibit that, at the time, was one of a kind in Michigan: Sexual Daring in the Academy: Preserving Lesbian Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Heritage at the University of Michigan & Michigan State University. Sponsered by the University Library Diversity Committee, the Lavender Information & Library Association, and the UM Student Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, this exhibit took place at the University of Michigan, introducing the community to LGBTQ+ history that was Michigan-specific. This was a monumental moment for the queer community, but particularly for the transgender community, as it was only within the last few years of the '90s that transgender people were included in university groups.
