Transgender History at UM

Campus Resources

Due to the relative invisibility of the trans community, campus resources have sometimes been harder to find. Though earlier traces of discourse on transgender inclusion can be found, as well as instances of transgender activism, resources provided by the campus in support of the trans community largely developed later in the 1990s and 2000s, evolving into today's campus resources and policies.

In 1997, the office now known as the Spectrum Center first formally updated its name to include transgender people. This undated pamphlet comes from this period in the office's history, as the name is listed here as the "Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Affairs," placing the document most broadly as from between 1995 and 2008. This informational pamphlet was used to introduce the transgender identity, as well as contemporary terminology associated with the identity, to community members unfamiliar with the concept.
