Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The Alpha Phi Alpha national fraternity is the oldest  intercollegic greek fraternity created for  African American men. It was founded in  Cornell University  was founded  in 1906, and was founded by seven students who believed that there  needed to be  a shared community space for Black men on campus (Alpha Phi Alpha, n.d.). 

In 1908, the two-story house on 107 Catherine St., Ann Arbor, is currently owned by local African Americans in Ann Arbor who rented the house to African American students at the university of michigan.  Six African American students living at this house would end up coming together to send a letter to the recently created Alpha Phi Alpha in Cornell University, New York State, about forming their own chapter at the university.  A year later,  the local epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha at the University of Michigan was founded   as the 5th national chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in 1909 (Williams, n.d.).
