Constance Cumbey

Constance in the Early Years

Constancy Cumbey, a Michigan-based lawyer and one of the first researchers into the New Age as a religious phenomenon. She enjoyed a distinguished career not only in law, but in Michigan politics as well. After publishing a book about New Age cults, she became a sought-after source among circles concerned with the New Age Movement. She saw the New Age as a concerted effort to undermine democracy, the Western/American way of life, and monotheistic religion. In the process of researching for her book, The Hidden Dangers of the Rainbow: The New Age Movement and Our Coming Age of Barbarism, she collected countless pamphlets, letters, and other notes about the New Age, which are stored at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan.
