Heidelberg Project

"The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor art environment that was developed by artist Tyree Guyton on Heidelberg Street, on Detroit’s east side. Guyton started the project as a response to the deterioration of his own neighborhood, as well as many other Detroit neighborhoods after many years of decline. Through the project, Guyton hoped to raise awareness of the decay of inner-city neighborhoods and the effects of urban sprawl." - Detroit Historical Society

Methodology

On November 16th, the site creation team went to the site of the Heidelberg Project to capture the artistic space. The Heidelberg Project is ever-evolving. We wanted to model the participatory nature of archiving that we hope our users will emulate. We took some of these images and transformed them into collages, creating art with collaborative art. These are juxtaposed to the formal incorporation of Heidelberg captures and items in the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
