History of the Inter-Cooperative Council of Ann Arbor

Socialist Era (1932-35)

The Michigan Socialist House was created in 1932 by Graduate Students that were part of the Socialist Club.  The Michigan Socialist house charged their members $2 a week and was run through democratic meetings, where each member of the house had the same say over the direction that the house was going.  The Michigan Socialist House was the first independent cooperative in Ann Arbor.

Considered a radical concept in 1932 and heavily scrutinized by the University of Michigan, the "Two Dollar House" was open to any student.   The Michigan Socialist House had to jump through loops and ask for aid in order to get up and running, but they were able to pull that off through the good deeds of the Ann Arbor community.
