LGBT Affairs Office name change (2 pages), 2007 A digital scan of a page of the Michigan Daily from September 17th, 2007, featuring two halves of an article about the search for a more inclusive name for the University's Office of Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Affairs—the future Spectrum Center. There was growing support for a name that would be more inclusive for transgender and other queer students. Some decried the initiative as taking inclusiveness too far.

Sexual Daring in the Academy This is a flier that was handed out by the Lavender Information and Library Association to spread the word about a new exhibit coming to the University of Michigan in 1999: “Articfacts and Disclosures: Michigan’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Heritage.” It was the first exhibit of its kind to show off transgender history specific to Michigan.

Letter to Earl Peron from Unknown This is a very romantic letter from an unknown man to his male lover, Earl Peron. In it, the anonymous man professes his deep love and trust in his partner, and expresses the wish that they would have a lasting relationship.

Letter to a G.I. This letter from WWII veteran Brian Keith to his lover and fellow soldier Dave was published in the September 1961 issue of ONE Magazine. Keith reminisces about their relationship, but the tone of the letter is bittersweet because the couple were not able to stay together. It is implied that Dave died during the war, and Keith has been missing him ever since.

“Gay Rights Protest” “GAY RIGHTS PROTEST: Student protestors covered their heads with grocery bags Friday, as they marched around campus to demonstrate for gay rights. Their hour-long protest was silent, but slogans on their bags proclaimed, ‘Let me out of the closet.’ The 12-member group briefly occupied the office of U-M President Harold T. Shapiro. Shapiro was out of town, but the protestors left a message: ‘We won't be silent anymore and we will be back.’ For more than a year, gay men and lesbians on campus have been pressuring U-M for a policy to prohibit discrimination against homosexuals” (Caption).
