John Tenniel

John Tenniel was born in London on February 28, 1820 and was one of the most well known illustrators of the Victorian Era. While he spent many years working as a cartoonist for the magazine Punch, his most recognized works were his illustrations  for Lewis Carroll's Alice novels. He worked with Carroll to create the illustrations, but their relationship was strained due to "artistic differences" with both parties frequently being frustrated with each others artistic vision (" Sir John Tenniel"). Tenniel was so upset by Carroll that after the completion of the second Alice book (Through the Looking Glass), he no longer accepted illustration requests. Depite these difficulties, Tenniel created argurably the most famous illustrations from the Alice books and would be a source of inspiration for Arthur Rackham when he would create his version of the Alice illustrations.
