Welcome

Welcome to the Abortion Access & Reproductive Justice in Michigan Archive. Our archive focuses on access to reproductive health care in Michigan over the past century.

Motivated by the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in June of 2022, our project seeks to trace the history of reproductive justice in Michigan. The archive includes documents produced by significant actors in the fight for access to reproductive healthcare, including the Michigan Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (MARAL),  the Michigan Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, and Planned Parenthood. We also highlight significant events in this trajectory, including the 1931 abortion ban, the 1972 referendum and ballot proposal, the momentum of Planned Parenthood and associated organizations in the 1990s and 2000s, to the overturning of Roe v. Wade this year, and the passage of Proposal 3 just last month.

In doing so, the archive employs a timeline structure, with a dedicated page for each decade. We also include a description page that offers insight into the considerations that informed the structure and features of the archive. Finally, we include a resources page where users can access not only reproductive health resources, but resources to contribute to and engage in the ongoing fight for reproductive justice and freedom.

Content Warning: This archive contains information regarding sexual assault, medical abuse, miscarriage, and abortion, which may be sensitive for some readers. Please consider this before proceeding.
